Di Indonesia sudah ada lima operator pemegang lisensi telekomunikasi selular generasi ketiga (3G). Layanan 3G pun dijanjikan hadir tahun 2006 ini, atau selambat-lambatnya tahun 2007. Di sisi lain, pemilik ponsel dengan kemampuan 3G mungkin masih terbatas. Apalagi harga ponsel kelas 3G memang berbeda, alias cukup menguras kantong. Tapi bagaimana jika 3G bukan diakses lewat ponsel, namun melalui komputer jinjing? Seperti diberitakan Cnet, Rabu (15/02/2006), Intel dan GSM Association berniat untuk mendorong penerapan 3G di personal computer (PC). Intel dan GSMA akan mendorong produsen laptop untuk mengintegrasikan modem 3G, HSDPA, dan EDGE dalam produk mereka. HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) dan EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) adalah teknologi pengaliran data tingkat tinggi pada jaringan bergerak. “Ini penting, karena artinya PC telah menjadi mobile. Kami melihat ini dengan sangat positif,” ujar Craig Conway, CEO GSMA. Conway melihat peluang bagi operator seluler untuk menggali sumber pendapatan baru. Beberapa produsen pun sudah mulai melirik kemungkinan ini. Nama-nama seperti Dell, Lenovo, bahkan Sony sudah mulai disebut-sebut akan mengadopsi modem 3G, HSDPA, atau EDGE. Meski demikian, pihak analis pasar masih mempertanyakan kemungkinan itu. Gartner bahkan masih merekomendasikan laptop dan perangkat konektivitas mobile dibeli secara terpisah. “Untuk banyak bisnis, kartu tambahan adalah investasi yang lebih baik dan fleksibel,” sebut Gartner
